He hoped his question book, which was designed primarily to entertain, will encourage young people to share his interests: to discover to the full the pleasures that can be obtained from reading and from observing life around them. The questions are intentionally difficult, as there is no fun in ‘knowing all the answers’. Indeed, as Gilbert Harding says in his Preface, the important point is not so much to be capable of storing knowledge oneself, as to know where to find the answers, and with this in mind suggestions are made in the answers for further reading.
